The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963: HCC's World Café Discussion

To celebrate African American History Month, join Heights Community Congress for a World Café discussion of Christopher Paul Curtis’ book The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963. The novel gives us an opportunity to look at questions of race, family, friendship, and hope—issues that are as resonant today as they were in 1963.
The discussion is FREE and open to the public--and you'll enjoy complimentary refreshments. Please RSVP at the-watsons-hcc.eventbrite.com *** Registrations are appreciated; walk-ins are welcome.
*** ABOUT THE NOVEL***
Written in 1995 and republished in 1997, The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 tells the story of a loving African American family living in the town of Flint, Michigan, in 1963. When the oldest son begins to get into trouble, the parents decide he should spend the summer and possibly the next school year with his grandma in Birmingham, Alabama. The entire family travels there together by car, and during their visit, tragic events take place that affect the whole family.
Although the Watson family is fictional, the characters are based on members of the author's family and the events are inspired by events from his childhood. Events later in the story center on the historically factual 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, a critical catalyst of the American Civil Rights Movement. The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 was Christopher Paul Curtis' first novel, earning him a Newbery Honor, a Coretta Scott King Honor, and the Golden Kite Award. [Wikipedia]
