Memorial-Nottingham Library celebrates Black History month

The Memorial-Nottingham Library, on Lakeshore Blvd. held two events in February, in celebration of Black History month.

On Monday, February 13th, a group of children from the Salvation Army's Learning Zone (an afterschool program for grades K-6), attended the "Black History to the Beat" program, where they "received an introduction to digital music composition and learned the art of writing poetic lyrics," said librarian Alfonzo Daniels.

Cleveland's own Edward "Phatty" Banks, helped the kids create a musical composition of their choice about African American heroes from Cleveland. They started recording their CD, and hope to finish it next month, on March 12th.

On Tuesday, February 14th, The Passport Project--a group of diverse musical artists and dancers-- performed exciting African Drum music, to the delight of the group of students and adults in attendance.

The group uses "the rhythm that connects us all," in their music and metallic-sounding drumbeats. They perform at free community events in Cleveland, S. Euclid/Lyndhurst and Shaker Heights.
