Senior to Senior Day!

The DoMore4:Good team at Collinwood had a busy afternoon volunteering at the Five Points Community Center, where they were invited to visit and spend time with the attendees of the center’s Daily Senior Program.

Five Points Community Center embraced the idea of intergenerational programming and decided to implement it into their own programs. Senior to Senior activities, such as the ones the DoMore4:Good team were involved in, provide a place for youth and senior citizens to come together to share talents, resources, and support.

Upon arrival, the ten DoMore4:Good students went straight to the cafeteria where they served lunch to around 30 senior citizens. After lunch, the seniors quickly took the lead by teaching the younger ones how to play Bid Whist and Dominoes. Some of the students had never even heard of Bid Whist previously, and learned that they had been playing Dominoes incorrectly!

At the end of the day both the senior citizens and the high school students enjoyed their time together. The students were inspired to bridge the generational gap and will continue to volunteer at the center. The senior citizens asked them  if next time they would teach them about iPhones and computers (in order to keep up with their grandchildren), as well as give them dance lessons in the latest ‘line dancing’.

The afternoon was a success, supporting our mission to do more for good within our local communities.
