SJN Students Get Up Close With Nature

The students at SJN recently made a visit to the Lake Farm Park to get some first-hand experience with nature. While there, they were given an opportunity to see the chickens, cows, sheep, and pigs up close and person, and even got to pet a few. They saw demonstrations of milking machines and shepherd dogs and sheep-shearing. When asked about it afterwards, the general response to "Was it fun?" was a resounding cheer!

When they got back to school students drew pictures and wrote sentences about what they saw, heard, and smelled on the trip to the Farm Park as the teachers used the sensory experiences to engage with learning about language and science. It's fun to learn about how we get wool for out sweaters and blankets, but its so much better to go and actually see how it's done.

SJN students make many trips outside the classroom to see and do new things (as I write this, a big group of them are at the zoo!), and there are always opportunities for parents and family members to get involved.

"I liked the pigs best," said one student. Why? "Because they smelled bad!" he gleefully replied.
