Learning Through The Arts: Waterways To Waterways Community Art Project

On Thursday, April 18th, Cleveland Public Library Collinwood Branch, in partnership with Praxis Fiber Workshop and Collinwood Reads, hosted New Tech Collinwood students and the Collinwood Community to create banners to hang from the Detroit-Superior Bridge in downtown Cleveland on June 22nd. The workshop is part of the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River catching fire on June 22, 1969 and part of The Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion: Waterways to Waterways. Waterways to Waterways brings together a group of international and local artists to focus on projects that connect the regenerative efforts for the Cuyahoga to global waterways.  We are so proud that local artist, Jessica Pinsky, Executive Director of Praxis Fiber workshop, involved the Collinwood Community as part of this amazing exhibit.  Special thanks to Sharon Kidd, Site Coordinator for Wraparound Services at New Tech Collinwood, OhioGuidestone, and art teacher, Ms. Avers, for their help in getting students to participate. Thank you also goes to Teacher, Ebony,Coordinator for "Collinwood Reads" for her support.  Collinwood Branch Manager, Caroline Peak, and Jessica Pinsky were featured on the April 12th edition of “We the People” on WKYC to promote the program. We appreciate the show’s Executive Producer, Margaret Bernstein, for the opportunity to talk about this wonderful community art project.

National Library Card Sign-Up Month Returns September 1-30

This September, the Euclid Public Library is again teaming up with eight other local library systems to encourage every child under 18, to sign up for a free library card or get rid of fines that may stop them from checking out their favorite items. The initiative, called A Card for Every Kid, will take place September 1-30 to coincide with National Library Card Sign-Up Month. It is a cooperative effort among the Cuyahoga County library systems to raise awareness of the importance of library card ownership for children and teens. The initiative also seeks to gain a better understanding of the barriers that keep some children and teens from owning a library card.

Visit EPL, Cleveland Public Library, Cuyahoga County Public Library, East Cleveland Public Library, Heights Public Library (Cleveland Heights-University Heights), Lakewood Public Library, Rocky River Public Library, Shaker Heights Public Library, and Westlake Porter Public Library anytime during September to register for a library card or to receive a one-time waiver of fines and fees. Participants will receive a Smencil™ while supplies last! Some restrictions may apply. Please visit EPL for more information.
