Jewelry Making Class was Lots of Fun

The Memorial-Nottinghsm Library took their a jewelry making class to the Salvation Army last month, and 45 kids had fun making necklaces and bracelets as gifts for their moms on Mother's Day.

The children were participants in the Learning Zone after school program at the Salvation Army, which provides educational and recreational activities to broaden their horizons while enhancing their capabilities and self-esteem.

Ms. Jameson, a local jewelry artist, gave each child a packet of beads in different colors, sizes and shapes, and showed them how to string the beads onto cords and mix big beads with smaller beads of silver and gold for a nice design. Kids exchanged beads, and created original necklaces and bracelets with amazing color combinations of red, blue, tan, gold, and silver.

It was a fun project that enhanced all the kids creativity, on one of the first sunny days of spring.

For information on upcoming youth events at the Library, call librarian Alfonzo Daniels at 216-623-7039.

Help warm up Cleveland

Nothing is more important during winter than keeping warm. Most will be bundled up with mittens, hats and scarves. A native Clevelander is always prepared for the brisk winds and heavy snowfall. What about those who aren’t as fortunate to have these things on hand? In our community we a have a program called Warm-Up Cleveland which is hosted by the Cleveland Public Library.

This annual campaign was started by library staff in 2010 in memory of Librarian Diane Mathews, who was a lifelong knitter. She wanted her talents to be used for a charitable cause and Warm-Up Cleveland does just that. Items have been previously donated to charities such as: 2100 Lakeside Men’s Shelter; Westside Catholic Center; Laura’s Home; Asian Services;  Providence House; and the Women’s Recovery Center.  At Collinwood Branch the Crochet Club is working on more items to donate with goals to reach even more people this year. We also need your help to make this program an even bigger success! Donations can be made at any Cleveland Public Library Branch or Main Library and upcoming Crochet Club meetings are as follows: December 20, and January 31. Join us and use your creativity to better our community.

LIBRARY LEVY CORRECTION: Please Don't Panic

My call to take the library levy seriously, with its threat of branch closings, was perhaps a bit too serious: the official assessment of the situation is,”If the levy fails, Cleveland Public Library will lose 48% of its funding. The Library will have to make cuts to its services.”

"Cuts to services" don't necessarily mean cuts to branches, of course – but any cuts demanded by a 48% drop in revenue would be things we’d badly miss.

So don’t relax completely.

Do go to www.SupportClevelandLibrary.com, or email joycedodrill@sbcglobal.net to offer your assistance in getting the levy passed.

Keep our libraries open

Want to help keep Emma's library open?

My friend Joyce is looking for a little help: On November 5, the Cleveland Public Library will be placing a 5-year, 5.8 mil renewal levy on the ballot. This money makes up almost half of the Library's operating budget, and if it doesn't pass, many of the Library's 27 branches will have to close.

We’ve already lost a branch in the neighborhood, when Memorial and Nottingham were replaced by Mem-Nott, and losing either that one or the Collinwood branch on E.152 would be a serious downer.

Keep in mind: this is a renewal; if it passes, homeowners won’t have to fork out any more than they’re paying now. If it fails, and your house is assessed at $100,000, you’ll save $177.63  per year (which I calculate to be $14.80 per month) but my granddaughter Emma (who has just reached the magic age at which she’s allowed to ride her bike to the library All Alone – albeit with guardians checking her along the way) may have no library to go to. Not to mention Jane, who has started kindergarten and is approaching the even more magic age when the chicken scratches turn into information. Not to mention the many parents and grandparents who use the library as a tutoring site, and the users of all ages who fill the computer seats and check out bags full of movies and books.

Library levies often pass, but this one will be at the end of a ballot stuffed with other important issues, and voters get ballot fatigue.

So – would you like to help with phone banks or canvassing? Or just put yard signs up? Well, then! Get in touch with Joyce at joycedodsrill@ sbcglobal.net, or go to the campaign website at www.SupportClevelandLibrary.com.

Congressional District Art Competition at Memorial Nottingham Library

The Memorial/Nottingham Library hosted The Eleventh Congressional District Art Competition, for the first time, this year. The exhibit was on display at the library from May 9th until June 3rd. The awards ceremony was held on May 25.

The art competition is a nationwide program, sponsored by the Congressional Institute, to recognize artistic talent in students from local high schools, in each district. Fifty three students from eight high schools in the 11th District submitted works of art in six different categories: collage, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, and printmaking.

The student artwork represented a variety of styles, and ranged from a colorful explosion of flowers emerging from a small box, (Crystin King, Cleveland Central Catholic High School,); to a bleak black and white photo of a lone figure sitting in a chair at the end of an alley between two dilapidated buildings, (Chris Martin, Charles F. Brush High School).

With many of the arts being deleted from our schools' curricula, it was nice that “traditional fine art” was represented.  Ashley Wagner’s block print, "Calligraphy," was a field of movement with its multi-print design of musical notes in red and orange, and Myesha Gardner’s photograph,Untitled,”  showed contemplation in a female face obscured by delicate floral lace. Many of the students did more than just create artwork, they commented on social themes as well.

John Hairston Jr., District Director, for the 11th District, spoke on behalf of Representative Marsha L. Fudge. “We have to accentuate the positive things our young people are doing,” he said. “Marsha Fudge is proud of our young people.”  The artwork in today’s exhibit represents the students' “creativity, thought, focus, energy and direction.”

A member of the Congressional Staff, Anita Gray, called the winners from each category to receive their awards and have their pictures taken. State Representative, Kenny Yuko, was among the over 160 attendees.

Children's Library Program: How do animals survive in the winter?

Have you ever wondered how the animals survive the winter? Or what they do when the weather gets cold and there is a lot of rain or snow? With the recent blizzard we just had, and mounds of snow and arctic temperatures, it has become a really harsh winter for the animals. So what do the animals do?

These questions were answered by Carol Ward, naturalist with the Cleveland Lakefront State Parks, in the first of a three part children's program at the Memorial-Nottingham Library on December 11, 2012.

Animals do many things to survive the winter, she said. Some birds migrate in the fall to a warmer climate. Other animals, like the deer, coyote, fox and rabbit "stay active all winter." They grow thicker fur and a layer of fat underneath to keep them warm. Carol showed the children different animal pelts and let them touch the different textures of fur.

To demonstrate how fat helps keep the animal warm, a girl in the audience volunteered to put her hand in a bucket of ice water to feel how cold it was. Then she wrapped her hand in a protective glove insulated with a layer of fat. The glove protected her hand from the cold ice water, just like the layer of fat protects the animals from the cold.

Q&A Book Discussion with Michelle Alexander

In her book, The New Jim Crow, author Michelle Alexander writes that “we have not ended (the) racial caste (system) in America; we have merely redesigned it.”  Ms. Alexander argues that policies of racial inequality have been used over and over again in different forms in the past, and continue today through the criminal justice system which targets African American males.

The Jim Crow Laws were a system of rules, laws, and policies of legal segregation. And although they have been abolished, Ms. Alexander argues that the current legal system is another form of segregation.

A recorded Q & A session, recently held with Michelle Alexander, was the topic of a group discussion at the Memorial Nottingham Library, on January 5th. During the recording, Ms. Alexander said that she wrote the book “as a call to action.” The current justice system is a form of racial control, it is a “manifestation of a larger system,” she said. It is a “loophole.”

“We are living in a world of change…We are living in a different time…And democracy needs to be changed,” Alexander said. “With men incarcerated, the right to vote is taken away from them.” "And everyone should have the right to vote."

Students from East Clark participate in The Bully X Project

Students from East Clark School arrived at the Cleveland Public Library’s Collinwood Branch on November 16th to view a film entitled "Bully X" which was written and produced by CMSD students through the Reading RAMM (Recording Arts Music Media) program. Thanks to the Cleveland Public Library, students were able to view the production on the innovative Smart TV in the newly renovated Learning Center.

The program goal of The Bully X Project is to prevent bullying by encouraging youth to discuss the negative effects with each other and educate themselves about how to get help. The film is designed to persuade youth to steer away from negative and hurtful situations inside and outside of school. Edward “DJ Phatty” Banks, a well-known Cleveland area DJ, spearheaded the discussion and stood as a positive role model for the students from East Clark as he shared his own personal struggles and triumphs.

After viewing the film, the students were involved in a discussion about bullying and were asked about their outlook and opinions regarding bullying situations at their school. During the discussion, students learned about the various roles people take on when bullying such as bystanders, perpetrators, victims, and upstanders. It is the hope of all involved in this project that the students will become positive role models and upstanders on their campus.

Collage at Nottingham Memorial library highlights students' achievements

A collage, made by students who attended the “Collage It” event at the Memorial-Nottingham Library, on October 22, 2011, highlights the achievements of local area youths.  Articles about students which were published in local newspapers were used in the project that reflects this year's library "Teen Read Week" theme: "Picture It!"

Artist, Lawrence Baker, who has a M.F.A from Kent State University, assisted the students in the fundamentals of creating a collage.  “A collage is an assemblage of images that are connected through color and line,” he said.

Students chose the articles and photographs for the project, as Baker showed how using color in the background unified the images. “Color connects the images…,” he said.  “Learn how to listen and it will help you succeed… work together and learn from each other.”

continued.

Review: Season 1, Episode 1 of "Glee" is in your face TV

After watching the first episode of the first season of the television show “Glee,” I give it three and a half stars.  The show was entertaining but it had a lot of story lines.

There are several characters that face different problems. There is the Spanish teacher who married his high school sweetheart who likes to shop. He enjoys teaching and wants to be over a “glee” club to help students find the same joy he had when he was in the same club. However his wife would prefer him to get a job as an accountant. His wife tries to manipulate him by becoming pregnant so that he will quit his job teaching to make more money so that she can continue shopping.

There is a football player who enjoys singing but is afraid to be part of the “glee” club because his classmates think glee club members are losers.
