June 18th, we are celebrating biking, and getting active. Highlights of the event include a bike rodeo, bike safety, and group bike rides. We are also looking for prizes. We are in need of volunteers to help with planning the event and day of, including being bike ride leaders. This event will be alongside Walk and Role on 185th Street. As a secondary note, we’re hoping to get support from residents and stakeholders for approving a bike lane on Lakeshore Blvd. 

This year we are GreenUp Cleveland’s flagship neighborhood, and on May 7th, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. there will be a large scale neighborhood cleanup. GreenUp Cleveland is bringing volunteers and resources into the neighborhood to help make this event really big. We are looking for resident groups, churches, schools, and institutions to come out and help pick up trash in the neighborhood. There will be a post cleanup celebration. The Slovenian Workmen's Home, located in the Waterloo Arts District at 15335 Waterloo Road, holds a Polka Dance every Sunday.  It has been said that their "Waterloo Ballroom" has the best wooden dance floor in town.  It is called a Polka Dance but the bands also play jitterbugs, fox trot, tango, electric slide, etc.  Doors open at 2:00 PM with music from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM for your listening and dancing enjoyment.  Admission is only $10.00 per person.  A cash bar is available along with sandwiches consisting of sausages from our local meat markets.  Reservations for tables of eight or more are available by calling 216/481-5378 before the Sunday requested.  The following is a listing of the scheduled bands:

March 17, 2016 marked yet another great St. Patrick Day on E. 185th along with the city of Cleveland.

Along with St. Patrick celebrations, there  brought on a more serious matter of childhood cancers, hence the St. Baldrics event

Held this year again at Cebar's Euclid Tavern, St. Baldricks is the foundation that shaves peoples hair off to mimic kids going through chemotherapy treatment. This year marked a very personal and endearing moment at Cebar's when a patron, Mary Ann Borris, thinking that a goal of $500 was a little unattainable , stepped up and pledged that very amount to shave all of her hair off. This pledge was made in January of 2016. Two months later and a few week away from the event, Mary Ann, unfortunately, found out that she has cancer.

So with determination and a very strong sense of accomplishment, Cebar's Euclid Tavern Shave to Raise event took on a whole new animal. Starting at 1 pm and ending at 7 pm, online contributions started coming in at $237. Before 7 pm the event was well over the $500 mark and getting close to doubling the pledge. People from everywhere were donating online and in the bar. The luck of the irish was certainly with us that day!

In all 2 Barbers, Susan M. Brandt from Beachland Hair and Joe LaMarca from LaMarca Family Barber Shop, braved the shaves along with about 10 heads and lots of donations! Thanks to Cebar's Euclid Tavern for hosting Lisko Beauty and Barber Supply for the chair and supplies, and all the donation made by the patrons at Cebar's Euclid Tavern! See you next year!

Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama Presented by Rad Air Complete Car Care and Tire Centers present: The Miss Piston Powered Cleveland Auto-Rama Pin-Up 2016 Classic 40s/50s Pin-Up Contest in Cleveland, Ohio!

March 18 thru March 20 Cleveland Car enthusiast were treated to the 50 th Anniversary of the Piston Power Autorama, held at the Cleveland IX Center. Planes Traines and Automobiles converged on the ix floor for 3 days of contest, viewing and pure admiration for well kept machinery, that some, in earlier days ,may have been in a scrap yard.

Along with all the fine machinery was The 2016 Piston Power Pin Up Compitition, which included 27 girls from all over the United States, vieing for the grand prise,($$$$$) tiara and sash. Included in this were Dogg Paws Salon owner Jeni King, as a contestant, Bella Sin as a judge, and Susan M. Brandt, from Beachland Hair Designs, sponsoring and helping out with hair and make up.

Criteria included:

Wardrobe fitting into 20s-60s style only. Clothing did not need to be vintage, but it is best to have a retro feel to your wardrobe.

A few question asked by the emcee, ie whats your favorite car? what or who is your favorite musician ? where are you from ect ect ect... and also on Hair and Makeup.

The returning 2015 Miss Piston Powered Auto-Rama along with  John Shapiro of Cruisin' Times Magazine emceed the event. Event Coordinator was Miss Pearl Caprice (Hot Rod Girl Pearl).

Spring has just arrived, but some folks in Collinwood are already thinking ahead to summer and the 10th annual edition of the Scoop on Summer—a community arts project that rounds up all the events, programs, arts and eats in and around this gritty little slice of heaven. The 2016 Scoop will feature the Eerie d’Eries, the creepy little darlings spawned from artist Angela Oster’s dark and fertile imagination, who have graced the last two editions. New this year, the Scoop’s web edition will offer social media and online calendar integration, allowing users to save and share out events of interest.

The 2016 Summit Racing Equipment IX Piston Powered Auto Rama Presented by Rad Air Complete Car Care and Tire Center present the Miss Piston Powered Cleveland Auto-Rama Pin Up 2016 Classic 40's/50's Pin Up contest in Cleveland Ohio.

This year some of the contestants will be styled by Beachland Hair Designs, as like last year 30 women,  from all over the United States will be vying for the win. Including Jeni King from Dogg Paws Grooming. and Cassandra Majchrzak Fear from Fears Confections.

Last year we raises a little over $500 in a few short hours, mostly after the St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown Cleveland was over.

The Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Bereavement Center, Hospice of the Western Reserve, is hosting a free Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., to help those who are grieving the loss of a mother or mother figure. The tea will be held at the organization’s Lakeshore Campus, 300 E. 185th Street, Cleveland.

The event is open to anyone in the community needing support on their grief journey; no hospice connection is necessary. Seating fills up quickly, so early reservations are strongly recommended. To register for the event, call Felicia Dunlop at 216.486.6335 by April 22, 2016.

“Mother’s Day can be very painful for those who have experienced a loss,” said bereavement center director Diane Snyder Cowan. “The tea provides a reflective, healing place where participants can honor the memory of their mothers, grandmothers or mother figures while sharing special memories with others if they choose. We encourage those attending to bring a photo to display on our Table of Remembrance.”

Tea for the event will be donated by the Rosepointe Cottage Tea Room in Chardon. Homemade pastries will be prepared and served by volunteers. Those in attendance will have an opportunity to place a personal message on a memory wall hanging. 

The 6th Annual Beachland Hair Design, Shop Small Saturday Event, garnered not only interesting guest and, prizes, but a great time had by all!

The event ,all toll, raised a little over $1,000, and over 200 lbs of food ,donated to, The Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Our 50/50 winner claimed she would be donating her winnings back to the food bank and the other half went to Midwest Veterinary Hospital's Helping Hands organization.

With a basket raffle ,50/50, donations, and games all day long, Not only did the The Greater Cleveland Food Bank benifit from this event, so did the winners, losers, and neighborhood guest.

The Waterloo Alley Cat Project is very happy to announce their 7th annual fundraiser that is being held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 featuring a vegetarian buffet dinner along with basket raffles and silent auctions from 6:30 to 9 pm being held at The Beachland Ballroom, 15711 Waterloo Road. At 9:30 there will be a live music show headlined by The Sadies from Toronto and Ethan Daniel Davidson from Detroit! The proceeds from this event will be used for spay/neuter costs, vet bills, shelter and food for the cat colonies that the trap-neuter-return group oversee.

The Waterloo Alley Cat Project grew out of a couple of friends sharing a concern over the overpopulation of homeless cats and kittens around Waterloo Road’s business district. The project has now grown into an 8 member volunteer organization that has spayed/neutered over 250 cats since 2009. They have been awarded 5 grants: including two from the ASPCA in Washington, D.C. They were also featured the U.S. Humane Society’s national publication in 2013 as an example of a successful grassroots community trap-neuter-return organization.

This is not an event just for cat lovers; this is about helping to build a stronger community from the heart. 

The Young Leaders Program is a 501c3 non profit after school program located in the Collinwood Recreational Center. What we do is teach 6th -12th graders leadership skills and life skills. This includes teaching critical thinking,problem solving and community responsibility . We are a group of young adults working towards rebuilding our community and the people in it. We strive to make a positive impact on everyone we encounter especilly all of our teens in our program. We are a new program this is our first year and we are already receiving great community feed back. The teens in our program are learning and having fun while doing it. There is only one problem we are facing.Right now we are in need of sponsors and volunteers .

We need help from our community to continue to make a impact in our community. We need volunteers to come in and help our teens with homework. We need community assistance with our community service projects. We also need funding for class supplies,uniforms,field trips and events that we throw for the teens in our program. We need permission to use space for some of our staff collect donations ( outside of volunteers this is most needed). Overall we would love to collaborate with the people of our community in making our community better. Our staff and teens need your support! Bakers Candies a long time Collinwood resident late last year had planned to close its operation ending a decades long tradition of manufacturing candy products. In particular would be the end of one of their most loved products whipped eggs (whips). Whips were a holiday favorite and highly sought after item during Easter. 
THERE BACK - late last year Baker Candies with and agreement with another long time Collinwood favorite the Humphrey Popcorn Company will continue the manufacture of Bakers Famous Whipped Eggs. The Collinwood Slovenian Home at 15810 Holmes Ave, is hosting an event to benefit local, indepent caregivers of feral cats in our community.

There will be a Chinese Auction, raffle baskets, food, and cocktail specials!

Fully vetted cats from local rescue organizations will be available for adoption (approved application is required), so come and add a new member to your family! All funds raised will be used to purchase cat food that will be distributed to local caregivers.

Santa came early to the Collinwood Neighborhood Catholic Ministries House kicking off the Holiday Season on Sunday, December 6th in grand style.  He posed for photo-ops with the guests who ranged from eight months to eighty years of age. Festive music filled the air while children, clutching their gift and photo, scurried to the basement to design a frame to hold their precious memento.

The Women in Transition program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will launch a spring session at Metropolitan Campus in Cleveland on Jan. 19.

Starting high school can be an overwhelming experience for any teenager.  Students will encounter many changes including, larger class sizes, bigger buildings,  three minutes to go from on class to the next, and 8 different teachers just to name a few.  In an effort to alleviate some of the anxiety, Memorial 8th graders spent Nov. 13th visiting several area high schools to get a feel for some of the options available to them next year.  Students visited Jane Adams Business High School where the students were able to learn about the specialized education options that would place them firmly on the path to careers in Accounting, Business Management, Culinary Arts, and Hospitality and Tourism. The second stop to the day was over to John Hay where students learned about the innovative small school design where students can intern at Cleveland Clinic or earn over a year's worth of college credits while still in high school. The final stop of the tour was Cleveland School of the Arts where students learn to turn their artistic passion into a career.  The students thoroughly enjoyed each of the visits and hopefully walked away with a better understanding of what to expect when they leave the Cardinal nest and begin to fly on their own. 

Center for Advanced Mental Heath Practice Foundation and Collinwood Neighborhood Catholic Ministries are joining together to create a free urban garden called Siggy’s Village Community Garden and Free Urban Market. I am Mike Rogers, the master gardener at Siggy’s Village, and I would like to ask you a question: Have you ever heard of the term “urban gardening”?  What comes to mind when you hear the words “urban gardening”? I think of using every day containers and structures to house plants. So this week I challenge you to look up urban gardening, in my opinion the most versatile form of gardening. There is no set format, and to me, this is why it’s so exciting; it sparks imagination and creativity.

“If you had told me 30 years ago, when I was beginning my career as a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, that some of the most valuable lessons I would one day use in my daily encounters would be learned from practicing a martial art,” says Kirste Carlson, “I wouldn’t have believed you. It turns out there were some precious life skills even a doctorate in nursing practice hadn’t taught me.”

Carlson, who moved to Euclid three years ago, says she was delighted to find such a helpful resource just a few blocks from her house, in the form of Lake Shore Aikido, which offers classes several times a week in beautifully renovated quarters at Shore Cultural Center. Besides keeping her physically fit, says Carlson, Aikido provides “a laboratory for learning about yourself, and practicing a creative way of being under pressure.”

It's Polka Season at the Waterloo Ballroom of the Slovenian Workmen's Home located at 15335 Waterloo Road, Cleveland.  The dancers will be happy to dance in an air conditioned ballrom after being out in the heat all summer.

After playing balina/bocce/balinca outdoors all summer, you should be ready to come indoors and compete in the November 13 and 14 tournament.  The tournament will be held on the four indoor courts at the Slovenian Workmen's Home located at 15335 Waterloo Road, Cleveland.

Kids, get ready! Northeast Shores is hosting its 2nd annual family friendly event… Halloween on WaterBOO Road! The afternoon will be filled with FREE Halloween activities on Waterloo from noon till 2pm on Saturday, October 31st. Dress up in your favorite costume and prepare to be judged for the best use of reused materials, cutest, or scariest creature in the neighborhood. Experience Waterloo Road like never before as the kids take over the street for Trick-or-Treat, spellbinding games, and crafts!

If you all have not already heard about one of the newest programs in the neighborhood now you will. The Young Leaders Program is a afterschool program from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday-Friday in the Collinwood rec center. We take pride in teaching our 6th -12th graders life tools,leadership skills,problem solving,critical thinking and community awareness! We also take pride in doing service in our community every other Friday. Dear Collinwood,

We are excited to announce that The Center for Advanced Mental Health Practice and The Brand New Me Academy have formed a new partnership to provide workshops to educators in the local schools. It is our goal to provide child development training and support for the members of the Collinwood community. Beginning in October, we will offer monthly workshops at the Brand New Me Academy in an effort to teach key child development concepts to the community, facilitating learning for both educators and students.

These workshops are open and free to the community of Collinwood, Waterloo, and the surrounding area. We welcome individuals that are at all levels of their education in child development. We can all learn from one another as we share our own stories and through reading the theories of the many that have come before us.  

In collaboration with Collinwood Neighborhood Catholic Ministries and CAMHP Foundation, Collinwood now has a parcel of land situated between St. Clair and Aspinwall. It’s free and open to the neighborhood of Collinwood.

The process of gardening will begin next Spring. Before we can start that process we need a committee who will collectively determine what kinds of fruits, herbs, organic, and vegetables to plant and who would also bring new ideas and suggestions to the table.

In the meantime, we are seeking out volunteers from the neighborhood to participate one or two hours a week to do the gardening.

The Collinwood Slovenian Home is honoring their 2015 “Man of the Year”, Ed Kocin, with a dinner on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. The date has changed from Wednesday, September 16, 2015. The event will be held at the Collinwood Slovenian Home, 15810 Holmes Avenue.  Dinner will be prepared by Julie Zalar and will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 4:00 p.m.

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's annual Open House is Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tour the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center, learn how scientists work to keep our Great Lake great in our lab, visit the Virtual Sewer and Touch the Trucks. The event also includes opportunities to meet Wally Waterdrop and his special friends, plus crafts, contests and prizes.

This free, family-friently event is fun for everyone and is bigger, better and awesomer than ever. More than 50 exhibitors are on-site with interactive displays and activities.

Sewer District officials are also collecting expired, unused and unwanted prescription and non-prescription medications at the Drug Drop-off; this includes tablets, capsules, ointments, patches, syringes and inhalers.

The Open House is at the Sewer District's Environmental Maintenance and Services Center, 4747 East 49th Street in Cuyahoga Heights. Tours are first-come, first-served and the last tour begins at 3 p.m. Free parking is available off-site and shuttle service is available. See you there!

Music for Miles Returns at Waterloo Arts

Percussion Ensemble Creates a Joyful Noise. Bring the Kids.

Some M4M followers will remember a performance by Duo Anime, the percussion duo that made music with everything from drums to clapping hands. The group has expanded into four as the Cleveland Percussion Project, with Andrew Pongracz, Bruce Golden, Dylan Moffitt and Luke Rinderknecht, and it plans a lively concert for M4M’s Fall opener on Sunday September 13 at 4 pm.

It also plans a generous intermission to allow for a kid-friendly musical activity designed by Soo Ji Lee, the Korean pianist and student who is working with Waterloo Arts as an intern. And there will be cupcakes. (For grownups, the adjoining Callaloo Café will be happy to provide glasses of wine and other refreshments; indeed, you might stay after the concert for some Caribbean food.)

Instruments will include marimbas, a xylophone, vibraphone and glockenspiel, plus snare drums, bass drums and some “unique instruments” still to be revealed. The playlist will be at least as interesting as the instruments:

As summer winds down and autumn approaches, home maintenance and weatherization projects may be on your mind.  Thanks to funding designated by Councilman Michael Polensek, the Heritage Home Program is available to houses in Ward 8 that are more than 50 years old.  For over 20 years, the Heritage Home Program has provided the owners of older homes with free advice on repair or maintenance projects and has offered a low-interest financing option to cover project costs. 

If your home is more than 50 years old, you have access to:

-  A free site visit from a Construction Specialist to discuss home repair projects

-  Help prioritizing projects

-  Assistance finding contractors

-  Impartial advice on contractor estimates

Cuyahoga Job and  Family Services and the Home Heating and Weatherization Task Force will be hosting a Utilities Resource Fair, at Collinwood Recreation Center at 16300 Lakeshore Blvd, Cleveland, Ohio 44110, on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The free event will provide information and resources to the community, and enable customers to apply for utilities assistance programs such as Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Percentage of Income Program (PIPP Plus) and Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP).  Customers can apply for county benefits programs such as Medicaid, Child Care and Food Assistance.
