Get Out and Vote!

From March 4th through March 9th residents of Ward 8 who are at least 14 years old will come out and vote for their favorite Ballot Box Projects. There are 36 projects on the ballot, all are arts based, with a community focus. Topics include: Youth Engagement, Collinwood History, Vacancy, and Healthy Eating.

Voting times and locations are as follows:

Friday, March 4, 6pm-8pm, Slovenian Workman’s Home 
Saturday, March 5, 3pm-5pm, Collinwood Recreation Center
Monday, March 7, 1pm-3pm, Euclid Beach Villa
Wednesday, March 9, 4pm-6pm, Salvation Army

There are plenty of ways to find out more about the projects. First, you can go to www.ballotboxproject.org for information on all the projects. Starting February 4th at Memorial-Nottingham Library you can check out displays for each of the projects that will be on the ballot. There will be several Project Expos with all the projects on display. The displays will be at each of the voting locations.

It’s Time Again for Taste the Neighborhood!

Taste the Neighborhood is the annual fundraiser for Northeast Shores Development Corporation and will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the Lithuanian Club located at 877 E. 185th St. Please join us as we sample foods from North Collinwood’s finest restaurants and eateries as well as honor individuals and organizations that have made a difference in our community over the past year. In addition to the delicious offerings from our neighborhood restaurants, there will be a cash bar, and an auction of baskets donated from neighborhood businesses and organizations.

Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, and can be purchased at Northeast Shores Development Corporation 317 E. 156th Street or on line at https://tastetheneighborhood.eventbrite.com. Everyone Loves a Parade!

On Friday, March 4th, come out to celebrate democracy with a neighborhood parade. The parade begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Collinwood Recreation Center and will conclude at the intersection of Shiloh and Waterloo Road. We will march, dance, and twirl our way towards E. 156th Street, down Pythias, and throughout the E. 156th Street neighborhood.

The parade will feature neighborhood musicians, artists, and art projects that the neighborhood will be able to vote on after the parade concludes. There will be two grand stages with short performances located at the corner of E. 156th and Pythias, and on the corner of E. 161st and Waterloo. The parade is a part of Northeast Shores’ Ballot Box Project, funded by ArtPlace, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, and MetroHealth.

You might know about North Collinwood’s vibrant arts community, but have you met the neighborhood’s makers? The makers movement is a marriage of art, craft, technology and small scale entrepreneurship that is redefining the world of start-up companies. Over the past decade of Northeast Shores Development Corporation’s creative placemaking and attracting artists to North Collinwood, a considerable number of makers moved to and began working in the neighborhood. Some makers have been here decades.From old world sausage to limited edition prints to graphic design and even world-renowned sails, there are small businesses making things by hand every day in North Collinwood.

Dancing for Health and Science

As part of Collinwood 2015, Dancing Wheels Company & School has brought their troupe to O.H. Perry. The residency will work with 4th grade students and focus around Newton’s Laws of Motion while students work with professional dancers. Students will put on a production for grades K-3 at the end of March. Dancing Wheels is a considered one of the premier arts and disabilities organizations in the U.S. that integrates the talents of dancers both with and without disabilities.

Santa has scheduled his annual breakfast with the families Collinwood. Come out to Villa Angela-St. Joseph December 12, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to enjoy the best breakfast in town from Gus’s Diner 185. The students from VASJ will lead the kids with crafts. Of course, there will be pictures with Santa! The $5 ticket price includes breakfast, crafts, and a photo.

Big Ideas for Ballot Box

The residents of Northshore Collinwood came out in full force for the Ballot Box Project’s second meeting to discuss the four project focus areas that will provide guidance for artist’s proposals. There was so much excitement from the first meeting, that attendance nearly doubled!

Outside of the meeting space, a local musician welcomed guests into the space. Many sat outside enjoying the melodic sounds of Modern Acoustic Music Collective. Some passer-byers were intrigued, and wanted to learn about what was happening.

Collinwood 2015 is coming to a close, but there are still a few opportunities to get involved.

Get Hep Swing has one more free swing dance lessons available from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. for residents of Collinwood. If you attend the class, you can attend the dance following the lesson for free!

  • Saturday, December 28th features another 18 piece band, True North Big Band.  This is their big holiday dance.  

Memorial Nottingham Library will host a photo exhibit of the Social Discriminants of Health in North Collinwood will open December 3rd from 6-8pm.

Help Plan the Future of E. 185th Street

Join us on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at Villa Angela St Joseph High School Gymnasium, 18491 Lake Shore Boulevard, for this interactive meeting with the plan's consultants and representatives of the core committee regarding the Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI). We want to you to voice your opinion and hear your ideas on the current planning concept regarding opportunities, goals and improvement recommendations for the future including:

Pedestrian and bicycle-friendly transportation improvements

Land use and zoning

Redevelopment scenarios

Design guidelines for public and private improvements that will promote mixed-use and transit-oriented development (TOD) along the corridor.

The study's planning area includes: East 185th Street from I-90 North to Lake Erie.

The East 185th Street TLCI is funded by Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) and local matching funds from: City of Euclid, City of Cleveland, University Hospitals, Hospice of the Western Reserve and Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

This project will benefit the entire Community, but only will work with your support and input.

The students of Euclid Beach Apartments had a Back to School event August 8, 2015 where the staff of Euclid Beach Apartments and Northeast Shores donated and distributed supplies, and had health activities available from Cleveland Clinic. Survivors Helping Other Women Survive (SHOWS) is a group of breast cancer survivors using plays they have written to raise awareness about breast cancer and survivorship. Their first Collinwood 2015 event was Saturday, Aug. 22 at Collinwood Rec. The women of SHOWS wrote and acted in a touching play about the breast cancer experience from diagnosis to survivorship. Afterwards, the attendees had an opportunity to discuss statistics and prevention. Northeast Shores Wins Art Place Funding for Ballot Box Project

Residents and neighborhood stakeholders will be deciding how a $200,000 grant from Art Place will be spent on neighborhood art projects. The community will vote on their favorite projects, a process known as participatory budgeting (PB). PB is a different way to manage public money, and to engage people in government. This grant will give community members a say in how funds will be spent to revitalize the neighborhood.

No longer do kids need to go to the school down the street. With open enrollment, families can choose a school that fits their child’s individual learning style and interests. It is because of these options Northeast Shores created a book that features testimonials of the families and students that chose a school different from the one assigned to them by the district. For larger projects with funding available up to $5,000, check out Neighborhood Connections, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering the people of Cleveland. If you have a small project, or need supplemental funds up to $250, check out Cleveland Neighborhood Progress’ O&A Grant created to help out the neighborhood with short term financial needs. Deadline for Neighborhood Connections is August 14, 2015 and the Mini Responsive Grant with deadlines July 2, 2015, September 3, 2015 and November 5, 2015.

Northeast Shores Announces Artist Renter Equity Housing Program

Renting while earning equity? Is that even possible? It is now, thanks to the local non-profit, Northeast Shores Development Corporation. In a partnership with Cincinnati-based company Cornerstone Corporation for Shared Equity, Northeast Shores is launching their newest program known as the Renter Equity Program for local artists. The housing incentive will be Cleveland’s first-ever shared equity program to allow renters who are artists to earn equity while renting a property.

Cleaning for Summer Fun!

During the beginning of May, residents across Collinwood headed to the streets and the beach to beautify the neighborhood. We removed over 100 bags of trash and yard debris. If you haven’t picked up enough trash, you are invited to join the Euclid Beach Adopt-a-Beach team each month. Now we’re ready to celebrate!

Summer is near, and we are going to rock n roll! Euclid Beach Live runs from June 12 through August 21. This year, they’re stepping it up with the addition of food trucks. It is hard to believe the time has come to think about the Euclid Beach Blast. Vendors and volunteers are needed. Announcing Collinwood 2015

So what is Colllinwood 2015? Through this exciting new program, we’ll be giving artist and health practitioner teams an opportunity to propose creative solutions to improving health outcomes in the neighborhood. The Collinwood 2015 initiative engages stakeholders in thinking about how the arts can improve community health.  As a whole, these grassroots projects will help bend the upward trajectories of obesity and other chronic diseases in the neighborhood, while also activating neighborhood green spaces and getting stakeholders collectively engaged in what otherwise might seem to be an intractable problem.

Unprecedented Turnout Kicks Off East 185th Street Planning Effort

Residents, property and business owners met on Tuesday evening February 24, 2015 at Villa Angela St Joseph’s Gymnasium to view data maps and share goals and dreams for planning the future of East 185th Street. The planning effort utilized the Transportation of Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI) funding from the Northeastern Ohio Area-wide Coordinating Agency (NOACA). The planning study is being sponsored by The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, The City of Euclid, The City of Cleveland, Northeast Shores as well as local businesses and institutions.

Tom Evans, Lead Planner and the staff from URS (AECOM) Corporation facilitated the meeting. Mr. Evans stated, “We had over 120 attendees at the E 185th Street planning study meeting.  I know the crowd vastly exceeded everyone’s expectations and the dialogue and input generated was amazing. The level of interest tonight is inspiring and energizing to everyone on the team.”

Tree Stewards Wanted

Collinwood is getting street trees. The sites have been selected, and now we are in need of residents to care for these trees that will be planted in fall 2015. Tree stewards will provide quality tree care and increase public awareness and appreciation for sustainable urban forests. As a tree steward, you will ensure every tree planted is properly cared for. To do so, you will engage neighbors and community groups to help promote the Urban Tree Canopy. You will also attend complimentary training workshops.

BRICK Ceramics Studio Opening

BRICK Ceramic + Design Studio is almost open. There has been an Easter Bunny spotting and he is preparing for breakfast with the kids in North Collinwood. This year the event will be held at the Salvation Army on Grovewood. Mardi Gras Celebration at this Year’s Taste the Neighborhood

For all of you that missed it, Northeast Shores hosted their annual Taste the Neighborhood at the Lithuanian Hall on East 185th Street on Tuesday, February 17. Yes, that was Fat Tuesday. With a Mardi Gras theme, the party was in full force. There were over 130 party-goers and 19 restaurants in attendance serving their finest fair, still nobody went home hungry. Taste the Neighborhood was more than good food, we celebrated the accomplishments of 2014, and raffle prizes lined the walls!

CLE Rocks Project to help Waterloo Engage the Music Industry

Northeast Shores Development Corporation has taken on a new challenge in partnership with Waterloo based non-profit Cleveland Rocks: Past, Present and Future. Founded by Beachland Ballroom and Tavern co-owner Cindy Barber in 2012, and based at 15721 Waterloo Road, where it also operates the Space: ROCK Gallery for music photography. Fueled by grants from the Ohio Arts Council's Creative Economy Initiative and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, Northeast Shores Development Corporation is the lead fiscal partner, while Cleveland Rocks does the legwork, in a project to help explore how a neighborhood can grow through clustering creative economies, and in this case music.

North Collinwood has been selected by the City of Cleveland to be one of the first neighborhoods to receive street trees as an effort to restore and protect the urban forest. Our community will receive 250 new trees to be planted in the fall of 2015. Street trees generally have a positive effect on communities.
