Memorial School Students Weigh In

The Collinwood Observer visted Memorial School a couple of weeks ago, to check in with the students and give them a chance to voice their opinions about issues that are important to them. Here is what some of them had to say:

“Sticking with the Dress Code” by Tarriana Kimbrough

Memorial School is a dress-code school. I think we should stick with dress code because if we didn’t, kids in gangs would be wearing their gang’s color. There would be many fights because people would be repping gangs.

We should also stick with the dress code because some people would probably be talked about because of the clothes they wear. Some people might gt picked on because they don’t have or can’t afford the clothes other kids wear.

So it’s better to have dress code and have all the kids wearing the same uniforms, than different ones, and supporting gang colors.

“Expressing yourself” by Gregory Black

I have something to say about dress code. I think we should not have to wear dress code because it makes everybody look the same, when people are not the same.

Everybody wants to express themselves and show their style and they cannot do that looking like every other person.

Also, if there was no dress code your parents wouldn’t have to spend extra money on clothes and will save money just buying everyday clothes that you can wear outside and inside of school.

“Feeling safe in my community” Ariana Boyd

My community is a safe place to be in. I don’t have to worry about any crime scenes. When I am at school I feel protected. With the security guards that we have I don’t have to worry about anything.

In my neighborhood it’s safe. We like to have fun in my neighborhood. On Independence Day we have a parade. Then we go to our park and eat. We have hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, juice and pop. We have people who paint our faces. After we eat we do activities. At night we watch fireworks.

I feel safe when I am with my family and friends. The thing I love about my family is that they are over-protective. They want to make sure that I am safe. I have a great time when I am with them and my friends. I treat my friends like they are my family. Sometimes we arguer, but we get over it.

That’s why I think my community is safe.

“Collinwood Recreation Center” by Cryshtian Love

I visit Collinwood Recreation Center everyday. At Collinwood Rec there are a lot of different activities for children of all ages.

Right now I am in a program where I am being trained to ride a horse. We went on a field trip to a ranch where we were introduced to some different types of horses.

In the past I have participated in an all girls basketball league. There is a free lunch program for people who may not have food of their own. There is a computer lap and a digital media class. There is a swimming pool for those who like to swim and a gym for more physical things.

At Collinwood Rec there are great staff members there are great staff members. There’s Ronnie, Donell, Ashley, Sam, D.C., and Miss Tiara. Ronnie is like a mentor to me. Donell keeps me out of trouble and doesn’t let any boys come near me. Ashley likes when I participate in the different activities they have. Sam is a good listener. Miss Tiara is the new manager but is very nice.

Collinwood Recreation Center is a place where everyone can come and chill!! In almost every room there is a T.V.

“Memorial School since Kindergarten”  by Mynique Hoges

I like Memorial Schoool because it is my dad’s school. When I first started my school I thought it was going to be bad. I have been at Memorial since it opened Kindergarten.

When I started I did not like the dress code because you can only wear certain colors (blue, white, navy blue, and black.) After I got to the 2nd grade I realized I had no choice but to wear it, so I went and got school clothes that are fashionable.

Memorial has done wonderful things for me. There are great activities for us.

“The Miami Heat has it easy” by  Malik Thomas

Here we have the Miami Heat. They are the reigning NBA World Champions. It is so amazing how easy their road is to repeat. Every formidable opponent to beat the Miami Heat has a key player or players out with injuries.  The Los Angeles Lakers lost MVP candidate Kobe Bryant when he tore his Achilles tendon playing the Warriors. The Indiana Pacers lost their star player Danny Granger to knee surgery after only playing 5 games. The Oklahoma City Thunder lost All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook to a torn meniscus in his right knee, and as you saw last night, they lost the series 4-1 to the Grizzlies.
