Radio Personality Mark Ribbins of 107.3-FM, The Wave Headlines Free Oct. 10 Community Luncheon Event

10th Annual Voices for Hospice to Focus on “Hidden Patients, Hidden Lives”

Hospice of the Western Reserve’s African American Outreach Committee is hosting a free community luncheon event entitled, “Voices for Hospice: Hidden Patients, Hidden Lives,” on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the 700 Beta Banquet and Conference Center (adjacent to the Hilton Garden Inn), 700 Beta Drive, Mayfield Village. Educational exhibits from a variety of community organizations will be available for browsing beginning at 11 a.m.; the luncheon and program follow from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging and E.F. Boyd & Son.

Popular radio personality Mark Ribbins (@JazzPreacher) of 107.3-FM, The Wave, will headline as the keynote speaker and The Wave’s Grace Roberts will emcee. The program commemorates World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. Registration for the luncheon (required) is available beginning Sept. 1 at hospicewr.org/voices or by calling 216.486.6645.

“By shining a light on the hidden lives of real families in our community and sharing their stories, we hope people will walk away with a better understanding of how hospice supports the medical, social, practical and spiritual needs of people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families,” said LaBena Fleming, Provider Relations Manager at Hospice of the Western Reserve and Co-chair of this year’s event. “The luncheon provides church groups, social organizations, families and friends with a great way to learn more in a relaxed setting while also learning about many other community resources available to help with a variety of services and needs.”

About Hospice of the Western Reserve

Hospice of the Western Reserve is one of the region’s most experienced providers of hospice care. Now in its 37th year, the nonprofit agency provides end-of-life care, caregiver support and grief support services for families throughout Northern Ohio. Care is provided in private residences, nursing homes or “wherever a patient calls home,” and at two inpatient care centers: David Simpson Hospice House in E. 185th Street in Cleveland and Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake. The agency’s calling extends far beyond “typical hospice care” to serving the most vulnerable, including a pediatric program for children with life-threatening illnesses, grief support and crisis response for local schools, and specialized end-of-life care for the most complex cases. The organization’s Hospice Institute provides continuing education to the Northern Ohio medical community. For more information, visit www.hospicewr.org, or call 800.707.8922.

Spring Sale of Books and AV materials

After six months of sorting and a frantic day of set-up, the  Spring Book Sale, held by the Friends of the Euclid Public Library, will be on April 25th and 26th, with a preview night for members on the 24th. There will be one table of special books with higher prices. Aside from that, hardbound books are 50¢; paperbacks (including large ones) are 25¢. DVDs are $2.00; most other audio-visual media are $1.00 or less. Materials have been collected for half a year, and include both library cancels and donations.

The books are roughly sorted by broad library number categories. You might find a book on plumbing, gardening, business, cooking, animal care, child care, or health, all in the 600s (Technology), or something about movies, opera, crafts, or football in the 700s (Arts and Recreation). If history and travel is your thing, wander over to the 900s. Computers are in the 000s (General Works), along with journalism, Bigfoot, and flying saucers. And the 300s contain all the stuff about human society and how it works–from economics to politics to true crime.

There are also a lot of novels, mysteries, science fiction and fantasy.

Polka Movie and Jam Session at Cinematheque

Polka! The Movie, the documentary about Cleveland’s century-old love affair with Slovenian music and sausages, returns for a special screening at the Cleveland Cinematheque, Sunday, February 8, 2015, at 4:00 p.m.  Enjoy an accordion jam session at 3:30 p.m. hosted by the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum.  Joe Valencic, writer and narrator of the film, will share behind-the-scene stories. Key scenes were shot in Euclid's Polka Hall of Fame and the Collinwood and St. Clair-Superior neighborhoods.

Polka! The Movie traces how Cleveland-style polka music became a national sensation and is still enjoyed today across the country.  Joe, president of the Polka Hall of Fame, takes you through the Slovenian neighborhoods where the Cleveland-style sound was born a century ago.  The music got America dancing after World War II when Polka King Frank Yankovic (a long-time Euclid resident) scored million-selling hits. Vintage film clips and photos bring the polka past to life.

Polka! The Movie features performances and interviews ranging from legends like Joey Miskulin (Riders in the Sky), Walter Ostanek (Canada's Polka King), Euclid resident Richie Vadnal and Cecilia Dolgan, to younger musicians such as Kim Skovenski and Joey Tomsick. Cleveland personalities include Jan Jones, Tony Petkovsek, Bob Kravos, Bob Dolgan and the late Frank Yankovic Jr.  The camera captures scenes at the Polka Hall of Fame Awards Show; the Slovenian Sausage Festival; the Thanksgiving Polka Party Weekend at the Cleveland Downtown Marriott; Father Frank Perkovich’s Polka Mass at SNPJ Farm in Kirtland; Colinwood's Slovenian Workmen's Home; and Mitzi Jerman's hundred-year-old tavern on St. Clair Avenue.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer calls Polka! The Movie, “a film that will have you craving smoked sausage and stomping in the aisles.”  The Cleveland International Film Festival describes it as "a valentine to polka. Don't miss a beat; Polka! The Movie's a treat."

The 3:30 p.m. accordion jam session will be led by Patty Candela and Joe Strukel. The 90-minute documentary is presented in Slovenian and English with subtitles in both languages. The film was directed by Dušan Moravec for Slovenian television.

The film screens in the Aitken Theater at the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle. Admission $10; Cinematheque members and those age 25 & under $8; free adjacent parking. For more information call the Cleveland Cinematheque at (216) 421-7450 or visit www.cia.edu/cinematheque/, or contact the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum, 605 East 222nd Street in Euclid, (216) 261-FAME, www.PolkaFame.com.

Waterloo Alley Cat Project Celebrates National Feral Cat Day at Beachland Tavern

The Waterloo Alley Cat Project will be holding a free community awareness event celebrating National Feral Cat Day on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Beachland Tavern, 15711 Waterloo Road.  Alley Cat Allies created National Feral Cat Day in 2001 as the annual kick-off for its national educational campaign about the protection of stray and feral cats across the country. This event will provide a unique opportunity for everyone who cares about animals to get together toward a common goal — to end the euthanasia and suffering of companion and homeless animals.

This event begins at 7 pm and will include: a short informative video about the work performed by the Waterloo Alley Cat Project, audience judging of NE Ohio’s Cutest Rescued Cat Photo Contest, an art raffle, and appetizers. DJs Little Lighthouse & Ghoulbunny will be spinning music and live music by Shane Didow and Cobra Verde. Monetary donations or cat food donations will be greatly appreciated, but not mandatory for entry to the event.

For further information about how to enter your rescued feline in the Northeast Ohio Cutest Rescued Cat Photo Contest go to the group’s website for details: www.waterlooalleycatproject.com.

This event made possible by the Collinwood Rising Grant Program through the generous support of The Kresge Foundation, Northeast Shores Development Corp. and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
